Can You Install Granite Counters on Your Existing Cabinets?

Written by Planet Granite, Inc. on . Posted in Counter Tops, Granite, Interior Design

Granite Kitchen Countertops

Are you about ready to upgrade your old kitchen counters to attractive, modern granite countertops in Colorado Springs? It depends. You can absolutely get the counters that you want, even under the budget you want, but the extensiveness of the operation is going to depend on the existing installation. Here are a few things to consider when upgrading your counters to a heavier material.

Leveling the Counter and Appliances

The first step toward installing a granite counter is to level the existing cabinets. Before the granite is installed, the existing counter will be removed and the cabinets and appliances will be thoroughly leveled. Leveling is of critical importance to make sure that the counter stays in place and that it doesn’t crack over time.

At the same time, the cabinet boxes can be inspected to determine whether they can easily support the granite. Most cabinet boxes are designed to take on a significant amount of weight, but the weight may need to be distributed more evenly across the surface. This isn’t a major concern with laminate!

There’s also another alternative: granite veneers are occasionally installed directly over other counter materials. This is lighter and often doesn’t require a more involved installation, but there are downsides as well: It doesn’t add as much value as a whole counter, and it’s more likely to crack and need repair.

Adding a Base and Supports

Granite counters are much heavier than laminate, tile, wood or other popular counter materials. Some cabinets may already be largely prepped for this weight, especially if the cabinets were made of a strong, solid hardwood. If the cabinets aren’t reinforced, more material may need to be added to the base for support.

An additional structure will also usually be laid over the cabinets to support the piece of granite evenly, which is usually installed in a single piece. The true logistical weight of the granite will depend on its thickness. Granite can be cut with a lip or overhang to add the illusion of being thicker than it actually is.

Ultimately it’s all about the weight of the new material, and it is important to take the appropriate precautions. It’s best to invest in improving the stability of your existing cabinetry rather than experiencing expensive issues later on. Will a Granite Countertop Boost Your Home’s Market Value?

Kitchen Granite With Chairs

Are you considering new granite countertops for your Colorado Springs home? If so, you might wonder about the potential return on the work you’ll invest in your kitchen.

Whether—or how much—your new kitchen countertops boost the market value of your home, we know this: Countertops matter to buyers.

Kitchen countertops aren’t simply functional, as in decades past. Today, a granite, dolomite, or quartz countertop is expected in a desirable home or condo.

That said, let’s talk briefly about statistics.

A Full Kitchen Makeover is Costly

These days, the cost of a substantial, midrange kitchen renovation averages about $64,000.

The National Association of Realtors reports that more than half of real estate agents are urging home sellers to fully upgrade their kitchens.

Yet on average, less than 60% of the price of the complete overhaul comes back to the owner in a home sale.

A Countertop Upgrade Could be Your Perfect Alternative

You might not need to go on a renovation spree to sell your home. A seller’s confidence and ultimate success should be guided by the general state of most other homes in the same neighborhood.

If other homes for sale around yours have granite, marble or onyx, then you have a sensible reason to install a similar style of countertop in your own kitchen. Home buyers will see it the second they open the online gallery of photos your realtor displays.

Adding granite countertops, islands and service stations can bring extra shelf and storage space as well. These extras can certainly increase the appeal of your kitchen to buyers.

4 Kitchen Design Trends for 2019

Written by Planet Granite, Inc. on . Posted in Uncategorized

kitchen trends

As 2019 arrives, many residents are thinking about new kitchen designs. In Colorado Springs, granite countertops will continue to be a popular choice when redoing a kitchen.

Here are a few of the top kitchen design trends for 2019.

1. Terrazzo Countertops

Terrazzo adds old-school charm to a kitchen, with bits of glass, marble or other materials embedded in countertops or tiles for floors, a backsplash or walls. For centuries, masons have known the value and versatility of terrazzo. Homeowners will love these countertops, which are scratch and stain resistant and do not conduct heat.

2. Dark Colors

For many years, the emphasis in kitchen design was on bright colors. The trend is shifting as dark jewel-toned navy, black, emerald and plum become more popular. That’s an ideal opportunity to contrast with granite counters in Colorado Springs kitchens.

3. Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops in Colorado Springs have been a popular choice that shows no signs of slowing. Quartz countertops offer so many advantages, from easy maintenance to anti-microbial properties. In recent years, manufacturers have expanded the number of colors, patterns, swirls and veining that can mimic other materials. The recent color trends should persist with softer, neutral cream, taupe, grey or white finishes.

4. Multipurpose Islands

Kitchen islands have been a popular choice for decades but were often treated as an afterthought. Not any longer. Kitchen islands are increasingly the focal point and the hub of a bustling kitchen. Islands today make a visual impact with larger sizes designed to carry out multiple uses, from food prep to family dining to homework spots. Thinking about your island as an additional kitchen countertop space opens up many design possibilities.

The possibilities for Colorado Springs kitchen countertops are limitless and can fit into any design. If you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen in 2019, contact Planet Granite for an appointment or free consultation.

Planning an Outdoor Kitchen With Granite

Written by Planet Granite, Inc. on . Posted in Granite

One of the best things about living in Colorado Springs is the backdrops. There are towering mountains to the west and the beautiful, wide open blue skies of the plains in every other direction. It’s no wonder so many Colorado Springs residents enjoy spending their time outdoors and that when it comes to home renovations, expanding living spaces and transitioning backyards into kitchens and second living rooms is a very popular home remodel here. If you are likewise in the midst of planning an outdoor kitchen, you couldn’t pick a better place or time to do so!

Start in Winter to Grill in Spring

Winter is a great time to start considering this project so that you can get started before the warm weather rolls in and enjoy it once it does. Important aspects to consider in this time include the type of appliance you’re going to install, roof coverings, electrical set-up, and countertops. In the last type of material, we highly recommend the use of granite in outdoor kitchen spaces.

Granite is an excellent choice for the surfaces in outdoor kitchens (and in truth other outdoor living spaces) thanks to its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, fade resistance, and low maintenance.

A Peek at Good Layout Fundamentals for Granite Countertops & Grills

Once you have an idea of the appliances and countertop material you’re going to use, the next step is layout. We recommend starting first with positioning the grill. The grill will be the heart of your outdoor kitchen, and it’s important to position it where it can be readily accessed and in such a way (we recommend perpendicular to the dining spaces) so as promote conversations with family and guests.

With the grill in place, you can start installing countertops and other major items like a sink and refrigeration set-up. A good rule of thumb is to place refrigeration units as far away from the grill as possible, position the sink next to the refrigeration for easy washing of vegetables and the like, and have a long granite countertop next to the grill open and ready for slicing and dicing.

Ideas for Remodeling Your Kitchen With Granite

Planet Granite Countertops

Granite is a truly versatile product. It comes in an amazing array of colors, from soothing charcoal gray to forest green to emerald red. It is easy to clean, very durable, and has a beautiful, timeless look to it. What’s not to love about granite? Here are a few ideas to consider for Colorado Springs granite kitchen countertops:

Ideas for Remodeling Your Kitchen With Granite

Add a kitchen island with a granite countertop: Kitchen islands are a great way to add a little pop of color to your kitchen, be able to do more things in your kitchen, and offer more places for people to socialize. You don’t have to have the granite on your kitchen island match the granite on your other kitchen countertops. Having it be a different color can be a great way to draw the eye to the kitchen island. White, gray and gold are popular granite colors at the moment.

Freshen up your kitchen with a light-colored granite countertop: Nothing says clean, spacious and bright like a white countertop. If you are tired of mismatched or dark and gloomy colors in your kitchen, or you just want to make the kitchen feel cleaner, more spacious and mood-lifting, try replacing your countertops with white granite. White works well with any color and helps a room feel less stuffy. If white seems too bright, go for a neutral beige color just to lighten things up a bit.

Add lighting to highlight the granite countertops: Lighting can make all the difference in making your kitchen usable, comfortable and beautiful. Don’t be afraid to show off the granite countertops. Find some unique hanging lamps to go above a kitchen island and install some under-the-cabinet lighting for those hard-to-reach areas. Little touches like that can make a huge difference in how your kitchen feels.

Utilizing Gray Tones in Your Kitchen and Countertops

Planet Granite Kitchen

When selecting a color scheme for your home kitchen or bathroom countertops in Colorado Springs, you may wonder if the gray tones of granite might seem dreary. But actually, the opposite is true when it comes to the appearance of granite or even quartz as a countertop material. Lighter gray tones add a warmth and serenity to contemporary kitchens, while the darker gray tones will impart a sense of sophistication to a modern decor.

Using Gray Tones in Granite Countertops

Gray is a neutral color that can serve as a backdrop for a vibrant color scheme, or provide a blending effect for kitchens and bathrooms that boast muted tones. When gray hues are used appropriately, they can add a heightened sense of calm to an environment.

A wide range of gray tones exist in natural stones: charcoal gray, pewter gray, beige gray, and blue-gray are just a few. Here are a few ways to utilize gray tones in your kitchen and countertops:

  • Cherry or Mahogany Cabinetry – Avoid the dark-gray-toned stone and instead opt for a gray granite pattern that is light-colored with a good amount of marbling. Look for a granite pattern with flecks of burgundy to the red undertones will complement your cabinetry.
  • White Cabinets – For a dramatic kitchen or bath, matte black and gray countertops are perfect for a contemporary styling. The contrast will accentuate white cabinetry and make a bold statement. For less contrasts, opt for brown and beige granite patterns.
  • Warm Wood Cabinets – Woods such as pine, maple and oak will benefit from the peaceful tones of neutral gray patterns that are light gray in color. Honey-toned cabinets mated with light countertops will fill the area with warmth and serenity.

To find the perfect combination of gray tones and color for your next kitchen or bath renovation in Colorado Springs, contact Planet Granite to speak with one of our experienced design consultants today!

Picking the Best Backsplash for Your Granite Countertops

Written by Planet Granite, Inc. on . Posted in Interior Design

Kitchen BacksplashBacksplashes serve both an aesthetic and functional purpose. They not only cover up the space between the countertop and cabinets but also protect the wall from water and other liquids that may splash while cooking. Backsplashes can prevent staining and even mold development.

These tile accouterments also allow you to add some color, patterns or texture to your kitchen. Backsplashes add an extra dimension to a room that is visually appealing as well as practical. However, pairing your backsplash with a granite countertop can sometimes present challenges.

If you are searching for the perfect backsplash to go with your Colorado Springs granite countertops, you may want to test out some of the latest backsplash trends!

Vertical Tile

Most backsplashes include horizontal tiling. However, vertical tile is starting to make a splash in backsplash trends.

Adding Glass

Granite pairs well with glass, and it adds a modern touch that many homeowners appreciate. Adding it to a tile pattern often makes a statement. It is also relatively inexpensive compared to other materials.

Integration

Some homeowners are choosing to let their granite or quartz countertops steal the show, and allow the backsplash to blend in more with the cabinets.

Classic Subway Tile

Subway tile is a classic look that seems to be in no matter when you redecorate. The plain white variation is perhaps the most traditional, but be careful that it does not “whitewash” the room.

Adding a Pattern

If you really want your backsplash to pop from your granite countertops, you might consider adding stickers or tiling that has bright, fun patterns. Decals provide a unique look that you can design yourself.

Backsplashes made from durable tile seem to last the longest, but they can become dated and dingy over time. Of course, if you change out your granite, you may need to adjust your backsplash to match the rest of the kitchen. If you need to find the perfect granite slab to match your vision for your backsplash, Planet Granite can help. Give us a call today!

5 Unique Cabinet And Countertop Combinations That Work!

Written by Planet Granite, Inc. on . Posted in Counter Tops

When choosing a redesign for your kitchen, you may be overwhelmed by what color combinations to choose. Many homeowners select neutral shades for their cabinets and countertops to avoid an interior design faux pas. However, you don’t always have to play it safe. These are five unique combinations that work when installing new cabinets and quartz countertops in Colorado Springs.

Black Cabinets and White Quartz Countertops

A black and white theme sounds like a risky design choice for your kitchen, but the end result is a modern and elegant space. The dramatic contrast can really highlight the brand new look of your kitchen.

Brown Cabinets and Green Granite Countertops

Chocolate-stained cabinets paired with a light green granite countertop has a modern appeal. This combination will work extremely well with stainless steel appliances.

Lime Green Cabinets and Brown Quartz Countertops

Lime green cabinets sound like something out of the 1970s, but they can actually be used with browns to create a country kitchen look. The brown quartz countertops and stainless steel accents keep the space from appearing dated.

Oak Cabinets and Gold Quartz Countertops

Although oak and gold sounds too close to create enough of a contrast, the combination can be used to highlight the patterns found within a gorgeous slab of gold toned granite.

White Cabinets and White Granite Countertops

The combination sounds strange, but this mix can actually make your kitchen appear light and airy. This design is especially helpful if you want to give the appearance of more space. Add splashes of color with the backsplash and flooring as well as installing brightly colored cabinet hardware.

Along with the countertops and kitchen cabinets, keep in mind other aspects of the space. The lighting and flooring will also affect your color choices. Flooring should have some of the same color elements of the cabinets. As far as lighting, light colored cabinets will appear better in kitchens with no direct light source while darker cabinets are ideal for brightly lit rooms.

Choose A Color Palette Before Your Countertops

Renovating the kitchen is a smart move whether you own a house, condo or townhome. It can create a dramatic first impression, and inspire people to better their eating habits by making homemade meals in the kitchen. But before you get the cooking space of your dreams, you’ll need to pick a color scheme for the counters, walls, cabinets and floors. It all needs to flow for the best possible effect. Learn more about the major factors to keep in mind before you start looking at samples.

Forever Beautiful

What’s trendy right now could lose you thousands of dollars in the long run. For example, in the 1970s wood paneling was all the rage, but that fad died out pretty quickly. You’re looking for something that will last years, and often that means choosing some of the pricier options like granite or quartz. Both of these materials have withstood the test of time, so let them enhance the overall value of your home. This is the time to remember that you’re making an investment, and a neutral color scheme will make it easy for both you and the next buyer to spruce it up and personalize it with their own accessories.

Earthy Colors

Beige and gray are both excellent colors for countertops, but you can also consider a red or a blue as well. No matter what you do, it just needs to fit into your overall vision for the kitchen. It’s important to think in the long term, you’ll want to think about how you’ll feel about it after several years. An understated, a beautiful granite countertop might just be the perfect place to enjoy your daily morning cup of coffee.
