Granite Countertops in Colorado Springs

Prolonged or repeated exposure to acidic compounds can wreak havoc on the finish of your granite countertops. Acids in foods, household cleaners, and other substances all have the potential to make the finish look dull and damaged. When acid etching occurs, you can often repair the surface by polishing away the damage and restoring its shine. If that does not work, however, you may need to consult with your Colorado Springs granite countertop installers to discuss replacement. But first, try the restoration process below.

Clean the Damaged Area

Before polishing the surface, you will need to clean the damaged area using a specialized stone-cleansing solution. You will only need to use a small amount of this solution to effectively clean the surface. After applying the cleaner, scrub the countertops with a soft sponge and then dry them with a microfiber cloth.

Polish the Surface

To restore the shine to your countertops, you must remove the damaged upper surface. You can do this by using a felt buffing pad driven by an electric drill. To improve the effectiveness of the buffing process, apply a polishing compound mixed with water to the felt pad. With its rough grit, this compound removes the acid etching and leaves behind a smooth surface.

After buffing away the damaged material, work on restoring the stone’s luster using a polishing paste. As it is made with a finer-grit material, this paste polishes the stone up nicely, helping it shine once again.

Apply Sealer

To keep your countertops looking their best, remember to apply sealer to the restored surface. The sealer goes on easily with a rag and stands up to the toughest jobs you can throw at it. Do your best to avoid acidic substances, however, as those can go right through the sealer and etch the surface.

On completing these steps, you should not be able to see any remaining acid etching. If you’re not satisfied with the results, give our team at Planet Granite a call at 719-522-0748 to discuss replacement granite countertops in Colorado Springs.
