How to Clean Your Granite Countertops

Granite Countertops

Good news for granite countertops in Colorado Springs: They’re pretty easy to clean.

Sometimes when you upgrade your interior, you find that the high-end option demands high-end care to avoid staining and damage, but that’s not the case with granite. The only specific things that you really need to do are:

Avoid Abrasive Cleaners

Granite is pretty resilient and very hard to stain, but the sealant used to protect the granite doesn’t much care for bleach, vinegar, ammonia or citrus-based cleaners. Save that stuff for glass and porcelain.

Clean Gently

A soft washcloth with some mild dish soap and warm water is all you need in order to clean your granite countertop. No special chemicals or products required. Because of the sealant, granite countertops don’t really need to be disinfected like more absorbent surfaces. One part water and one part isopropyl alcohol will do the trick under extenuating circumstances, but in general, a daily cleaning with a washcloth should keep your countertop clean enough to eat off of.

Dry With a Cloth

When you want to keep a nice beautiful surface showing, dry the countertop manually with a cloth to prevent streaking. You won’t damage your granite countertop by letting it air-dry, but if you’ve just had your countertops installed or resealed, there’s no blaming you for wanting to keep it looking nice and smooth.

With proper care, your sealant should last for a good long while. You can test to make sure by dropping some water on the surface. If it beads up, your sealant is good-as-new; otherwise, it might be time to reseal it. With regular cleaning and proper treatment, granite countertops will generally go at least three to five years without needing to be resealed. Granite countertops are anything but high-maintenance, they just look that way. If you’re considering granite countertops, give us a call so that we can give you a free in-home consultation.

4 Signs That Granite Countertops Should Be a Part of Your Next Kitchen Remodel

If you’re like many modern homeowners, you’ll be considering a kitchen remodel at some point in the future. Granite countertops in Colorado Springs provide an excellent way to give any kitchen an extra layer of polish combined with usability. Following are just four good reasons to consider replacing your current countertops with ones made from granite.

You’re a Busy Professional With Little Time for Cleaning and Maintenance

Granite countertops are ideal for those with busy schedules because they’re easy to clean with a solution of mild detergent and warm water. When they’re properly sealed, they don’t need complicated maintenance to keep them looking their best.

You’ve Got Children in the Home

Kitchen counters and sinks take quite a beating in homes with active children. Letting children help in the kitchen is a necessary part of teaching them valuable life skills, and granite’s stain-resistant properties help keep kitchens attractive. Granite is also a nonporous surface, which means it’s far less likely to harbor bacteria than its porous counterparts.

You’re an Active Home Cook

Granite countertops have more than just aesthetic benefits — granite is also a superior countertop material for those with serious ambitions in the kitchen. Granite is heat-resistant and won’t be easily damaged by hot pots and pans. It’s also great for home bakers because, like marble, it doesn’t absorb atmospheric heat and provides an excellent surface for working with pastry and bread dough.

You Want to Boost the Value of Your Home

If you’ve got plans to put your home on the market in the near future, granite countertops increase the overall value of the property as well as make it more attractive to potential buyers. As an added bonus, you’ll get to enjoy having a beautiful kitchen for the remainder of your time in the home.

Why Your Kitchen Island Granite Doesn’t Have to Match the Counters

If you have beautiful granite countertops in Colorado Springs in a discontinued color or style, what happens when you decide to add an island with a granite top? As long as you’re happy with your countertops, there’s no need to resurface your entire kitchen, mixing and matching granite can produce a lovely custom effect.

On-Trend Color Combinations

Glitz and glam are back in home decor, and you can combine white, gray and gold granite colors with most existing granite counters. For example, if your current granite counters are rich, dark colors, consider off-white and light beige granite with plenty of detail in the composition for your planned island surface.

On the other hand, if your counters are white or very light, a smooth black slab can create a huge wow factor when guests come over. For custom colors such as pinks, roses and grays, find a complementary color that brings out the highlights in your current style. If you want high drama and a royal touch, add a gold-toned granite counter to your eat-in island.

Redefine Your Transitional Space

If you want the island to command its own space and can place it between an open kitchen-dining area, you can use any color you want. You’re essentially creating a wall-less room where kids gather to do their homework, dinner is served and friends gather around for a nightcap.

Granite comes in styles referred to as colorways (ranges of color), so it’s easy to find the exact combination you envision. Be sure to approve the final slab in person before it’s custom cut for your island. This is a lasting investment, and you’ll be happy you made the time to do so later.

4 Care Tips for Your Granite Countertops in Colorado Springs

To keep your Colorado Springs granite countertops in optimal condition, you must provide them with the care they need on a regular basis. The care techniques and products you use will pay a huge role in your countertops retaining their amazing finish. To get started, keep the following care tips in mind as you work on preserving the finish on your granite countertops.

Use Proven Cleaning Products and Techniques

Although they are made of the toughest types of rock, your granite countertops can lose their finish if you use abrasive cleaning products. Instead, simply clean off your countertops using warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Never use bleach, ammonia or other caustic cleaners on your countertop, or those products could strip the sealant.

Avoid Exposing Your Colorado Springs Countertops to Acidic Substances

Acidic substances can also have a negative impact on the integrity of the granite countertop’s sealant. Therefore, it is important to avoid cutting tomatoes, citrus fruits and other acidic substances directly on the countertop.

Never Set Hot Pans Directly on the Surface

It is also important to never set hot pans on the surface of your Colorado Springs countertops. The hot temperatures can cause damage to the granite, leaving it discolored and in need of refinishing. If you need to place hot pans on your counters, shield the area with a cork or metal trivet first.

Regularly Apply Sealant to the Granite

Since you cannot overseal stone surfaces, you can get away with sealing to the surface up to twice a year. You can test your countertops using water to see if you need to apply sealant. You can also work with a granite countertop expert to determine the level of care your countertops need. Get started by calling 719-522-0748 to acquire support from our team at Planet Granite.

kitchen trends

As 2019 arrives, many residents are thinking about new kitchen designs. In Colorado Springs, granite countertops will continue to be a popular choice when redoing a kitchen.

Here are a few of the top kitchen design trends for 2019.

1. Terrazzo Countertops

Terrazzo adds old-school charm to a kitchen, with bits of glass, marble or other materials embedded in countertops or tiles for floors, a backsplash or walls. For centuries, masons have known the value and versatility of terrazzo. Homeowners will love these countertops, which are scratch and stain resistant and do not conduct heat.

2. Dark Colors

For many years, the emphasis in kitchen design was on bright colors. The trend is shifting as dark jewel-toned navy, black, emerald and plum become more popular. That’s an ideal opportunity to contrast with granite counters in Colorado Springs kitchens.

3. Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops in Colorado Springs have been a popular choice that shows no signs of slowing. Quartz countertops offer so many advantages, from easy maintenance to anti-microbial properties. In recent years, manufacturers have expanded the number of colors, patterns, swirls and veining that can mimic other materials. The recent color trends should persist with softer, neutral cream, taupe, grey or white finishes.

4. Multipurpose Islands

Kitchen islands have been a popular choice for decades but were often treated as an afterthought. Not any longer. Kitchen islands are increasingly the focal point and the hub of a bustling kitchen. Islands today make a visual impact with larger sizes designed to carry out multiple uses, from food prep to family dining to homework spots. Thinking about your island as an additional kitchen countertop space opens up many design possibilities.

The possibilities for Colorado Springs kitchen countertops are limitless and can fit into any design. If you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen in 2019, contact Planet Granite for an appointment or free consultation.

3 Tips for Maintaining Your Granite Countertops

Granite countertops are a beautiful addition to any kitchen or bathroom. However, you may have some concerns about taking care of your countertops when you make this type of upgrade. While granite countertops are certainly more work than vinyl countertops, the look and feel definitely make the additional care worth it. You can use the following tips to maintain your granite countertops in Colorado Springs for years to come.

1. Consider adding a sealer to your countertops

Sealers aren’t necessary for every type of granite, but it might be a good idea if you are using granite in your kitchen or bathroom. Granite is a porous material, and having it sealed can help maintain its coloring, repeal stains and enhance the shine of the stone. However, granite is generally moisture-resistant, so it’s up to you to decide whether sealing it is necessary for your situation.

2. Clean up spills quickly

You should make efforts to clean up spills on your granite right away, regardless of whether it is sealed or not. Liquid can go into the stone and change the coloring of your granite if it’s allowed to sit too long. Be sure to regularly clean your countertops with soap and water as well.

3. Avoid setting certain foods or liquids on your countertops

It’s a good idea to avoid putting meats directly on your granite countertops. Acidic products can also be harmful to your granite as well. You should also avoid putting oils directly on your counters. As a rule, use a cutting board or plate to set food on instead of putting anything directly on the countertop. This is not only a good idea for your granite, but it is generally more sanitary as well.

What’s new in the wonderful world of durable, colorful natural stone countertops? A recent choice for local stone color is already making waves in the decorating field. Called Quarried in Colorado, the slabs are cut to fit the requirements of each job.

Stone has an amazing display unique to each portion lifted from the ground. Veining, speckles, and color are unique to the types of minerals that compose the stone, as well as the dynamic natural activity that caused it to form in the first place. Natural slabs can be cut into a perfect countertop for any room in the house, such as the:

  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom
  • Laundry room
  • Office

The saw yields the first view of how each piece will appear. Polishing wheels enhance the completed, natural appearance.

Quarries in Colorado have been operational for centuries, mining and delivering stone locally and around the world. Colors and shades include beige, coffee, burgundy, blue, and burgundy. The beautiful red, pink, and rose shades of the Lyons Sandstones include bits of silicate, quartz, and iron oxides. That formation is thought to have started more than 250 million years ago.

Stone is exceptionally durable. No harm is done if you accidentally set a hot pan on the countertop without a protective mat underneath. It’s natural to have water spillage so near the sink. The top is seldom affected. Just a quick swipe of a dry towel absorbs the water without any damage. On occasion, acidic foods and drinks may leave rings or marks. Stonemasons have the experience and ability to remove or resurface stains and compensate for chipped or nicked areas.

Your home can dazzle family and guests with local stone color like Quarried in Colorado countertops regardless of where you live. Ask questions about where the stone comes from and how it holds up to everyday living. Expect to get expert advice regarding upgrades. The countertop will likely outlast the home. Simply remodel with a change in drapes, curtains, flooring, or paint for the remainder of the room. Meanwhile, enjoy the cost-effective beauty of natural stone.

Trending: All Natural Stone vs. Health

Written by Planet Granite, Inc. on . Posted in Counter Tops, Granite, Home, Interior Design, Uncategorized

Using natural materials in your home, especially on your counter tops, is important if you are looking for something that is safe for the health and general well being of you and your family. Natural stones have made a big comeback with beautiful, natural materials like marble, granite and soapstone growing in popularity.

Color Your World With Natural Stone Counter Tops

Using natural stones doesn’t have to mean that your counter or table tops in the kitchen will be any less elegant. Take granite, for example: you can find shades and patterns to suit every style. You also have the option of choosing a product with a hint of a blue, a tinge of gray, a warm brown or yellow, or pristine white.

Go Natural For Your Health

When making a choice of stone for your counter tops, going natural is a good idea. If you’re an avid baker or love to cook, you’ll get much more use out of the counter tops than the average person who does not. It can be comforting to know that the surface in which you place the food you feed to yourself and your family is free of synthetic and superficial material. Most foods, especially fruits and veggies, are like sponges as they absorb water and other substances they come into contact with. Natural countertops won’t contain any chemicals, and as a result, we won’t be ingesting these substances.

Natural Stone Counter Tops & Ventilation

An important factor to take into consideration when making a decision to install natural stone counter tops or other home structures is an efficient ventilation system throughout your entire home. This could mean anything from your vents, to electrical outlets, to plumbing pipes. Each of these factors allows ventilation of stagnant air indoors to be replaced with fresh air from the outdoors. When using any sort of natural component in your home, it’s important to provide it with proper ventilation as it would be receiving in its natural habitat. This will keep your lungs and overall health clear of dangerous substances.

Elegant Granite Alternatives: Quartz vs. Onyx

Written by Planet Granite, Inc. on . Posted in Uncategorized

It’s no secret that granite countertops are all the rage for kitchen and bathroom interior design. Durable, low maintenance, eco-friendly, and heat-resistant, granite offers countless perks to homeowners and tenants. Incorporating stone features into your home adds value and style to any living space, so why stop at granite?

There are some especially amazing stones to transform into countertops that are comparable to granite; case in point- quartz and onyx. Aside from their appearance, quartz and onyx are very different from one another. What makes one of them great is opposite of what makes the other great. Here are the details of each, and you can draw your own conclusions.

Quartz

Quartz is a stone that holds a lot of similarities to granite. It is low-maintenance, carries a natural stone appearance, and is virtually indestructible. There are a couple of major factors setting quartz apart from all other stones, however. Quartz is manufactured from a mix of mostly quartz stone and a bit of polymer resins rather than molded from stone slabs. Also, it can be created in just about any color imaginable. This is a huge factor for customers.

It’s indestructible factor eliminates the possibility of stains, and opens doors for warranties. It’s also not porous at all, leaving the countertops much more sanitary than those that can soak up bacteria. This is something you can’t get from other stones.

Onyx:

Onyx is an elegant, translucent stone that is rare and exclusive in its availability. Onyx can be known to be fragile and require more upkeep. The gain, however, is the beauty and rarity of onyx. It is more expensive, but it’s justifiable solely based on its luxurious appearance.

Given that it is a more fragile stone, a more careful consideration is given to the onyx product chosen for homes ensuring its quality. Of all of the stones used for interior design, onyx is used most commonly for its aesthetically pleasing qualities rather than its durability. Who doesn’t like living life on the edge for the sake of the best countertops in town?
