Cleaning and Maintaining Beautiful Quartz Countertops

Written by Planet Granite, Inc. on . Posted in Granite

cleaning quartzThose who come to the Planet Granite showroom in Colorado Springs will see many options for quartz countertops. Unlike naturally occurring quartzite that requires sealing to keep it stain resistant, the engineered quartz that is widely available today does not need to be sealed because the binding materials used to create it are non-porous. Whether you choose natural quartzite created from sandstone over eons or its manufactured quartz counterpart, you have made a wise investment in a countertop that provides beauty and durability.

Cleaning and Maintaining Quartz Countertops

Follow these easy steps to keep your quartz countertop in top condition:

  • Clean Spills Immediately. Wipe with a soft cloth and mild detergent if necessary. Use plastic putty knives or nonabrasive sponges for stains that have already dried.
  • Avoid Abrasives. Gentle cleansers and nonabrasive scouring pads do the trick. Avoid rough metal scrapers or abrasive sponges.
  • Stay Away from Acid and Alkaline Solutions. Acidic or alkaline cleaners and other chemicals (everything from nail polish and bleach to drain opening solutions) can erode the bonds in the resin.
  • Keep It Cool. Resins are formulated with plastic, so extremely hot materials coming from the oven or stove may damage quartz over a period of time.
  • Cut Elsewhere. Although quartz is scratch resistant, repetitive cutting on a quartz countertop may cause scratching. Use a cutting board when you slice and dice.
  • Occasional Deep-Cleaning Helps. To deal with dust buildup and stains that may occur under microwaves or other appliances, occasionally clean the entire surface with a nonabrasive cleaner and wipe away the residue with a sponge or damp cloth.
